Johanes Ribli Gorilla Motivation: Here’s What to Do When Going It Alone Isn’t Going so Well

Johanes Ribli Gorilla Motivation:

Americans like to view themselves as ruggedly independent. They view doing things without asking anyone for help as a virtue. This is exactly the train of thought that leads many people into getting in over their heads. They do solo climbs before realizing the mountain was too much for them. They go spelunking without guides. They attempt dangerous stunts without the proper support crews. Some of this is down to youth and immaturity. Young people believe that they are invulnerable, partly because their brains are not fully developed until they’re 25 years old.

It is not just performing dangerous and Ill-advised stunts. It is also a thing we do in matters of health. While few of us are doctors, we have no hesitancy about diagnosing our own health issues. We tend to self-medicate as if there were no dangers involved. We tell concerned friends and loved ones that we know what we are doing. When it is clear to everyone that our attempts at self-care are not working, we shrug it off.

There is no shame in getting in over your head from time to time. So you have no reason to feel bad about seeking professional help when going it alone is not working out as well as you hoped. If you have a spouse and a family you have to remember you aren’t alone and you don’t have to do it all. Often working with a graduate from an accredited MFT program in California or another major state can provide you and your loved ones with the resources needed to get well, not worse. Here are a few other reasons why going it alone is not always the event approaches:

You Could Miss an Even Bigger Problem

Your remedies for dry skin might be ever so effective at dealing with the apparent issue. The thing to consider is that dry skin might not be the only problem you have. It might be a symptom of an even bigger problem. You could be dealing with eczema without realizing it. You could also be dealing with some type of more serious fungal infection. All infections could lead to more serious, even fatal consequences.

You don’t need to run to a doctor every time you have an itch. You just need to be aware of when the itch is going on a bit too long. You should try all the safe remedies you can think of. Think outside the box. Be creative. But recognize when those creative, out-of-the-box remedies aren’t working. Calling in the experts is not the same as throwing in the towel. It is just taking your healthcare to the next level.

It Is a Lonelier Road

Did you know it was possible to die from loneliness? Perhaps not directly, but it happens indirectly all the time. Depression is one of the ways loneliness gets the better of us. During COVID-19, suicide among girls increased by over 50%. This is based on ER visits due to suicide attempts. For many, sheltering in place was no shelter at all. It was a prison that became solitary confinement. This is not the case for everybody. You have to be in touch with who you really are. If you are a highly social person, going it alone can not only be unpleasant, but dangerous.

All humans are social creatures. None of us can truly make it on our own. The signs of depression can be subtle. That means that if you are going to take the solitary route, you have to become familiar with the warning signs. Don’t allow your desire for independence to increase your chances of depression.

The Second Pair of Eyes

We tend to be very good at spotting the little mistakes of others while missing the big ones we make. We are bad self-editors. This is one of the greatest benefits of having a partner. We always have someone to watch our back and check our work. Whenever you have a big, complicated project, it helps to have someone off of which you can bounce ideas. As the old saying goes, two heads are better than one. Don’t forget about the benefit of having someone to share the load. Many people lifting makes light work of everything.

Going it alone is fine for some things for a limited amount of time. Just be careful not to miss bigger, underlying problems that a professional would spot. Be mindful of loneliness and depression. And it never hurts to have a second pair of eyes making sure you don’t miss anything important.
